Broken Promises

There was something calming in the way the rain fell that day. Sunset had to have been over an hour ago by now, just leaving the glistening drops to dance down illuminated by the moon.  To Kelsey, the rain was like a reassurance from above that everything would be ok. As it fell pattering down the window pane, she watched from her spot by the fire inside. Closing her English Book, she sighed, what is the point of studying? After all she hadn’t read more than the first paragraph.  It was too hard to concentrate. The excitement that they’d be able to share tea together made it hard for her to focus on anything else! He should be back by now, he had promised to be home before dark.  Everything would be ok, right? He would be home soon with tea and a story to tell. The rain softly agreed, whispering to her of safety and peace.  Until then, there was the fire to stock, the bedroom the sweep and the lounge to tidy.  Her only but constant companion for the rest of the night was the pitter-patter of the downfall. As reassuring as it started off, it became tormenting. He never came back.  Kelsey curled up on her own, again. It was ok though, she’s use to it by now. No dinner came that night and little firewood lay where there once was a pile. Kelsey knew there would be no breakfast that awaited her tomorrow. What is the point of studying if nothing will ever change? No matter how much anyone promises.
